Bob Williams in Wesley Chapel, Florida sends 215 packages weekly to the military in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Qatar and Kyrgyzstan - EVERY WEEK OF THE YEAR - 215 packages stuffed with necessities and comfort items for our men an women in uniform, fighting the War on Terror.

According to Stars and Stripes, Mr. Williams served in the Navy in the 1960’s. His sons now handle the family businesses, while he works for the troops, preparing the boxes destined for approximately 200 combat-zone bases.

The short story is that donations are needed to cover the postage. Mr. Williams and OurTroopsOnline.com spends approximately $8,000.00 a week in postage, from $20.00 to $45.00 per package, depending on the contents. He always has packages ready to mail, but often lacks the necessary postage.

When Barack Obama vilified George Bush and warned of the dangers of four more years of Bush policies he also promised to change Washington. He promised a new day, hope, and to sweep away the old politics that plagued the government. With those pledges came a general euphoria and the media proclaimed the coming of “The One”, the world’s president. Foreign leaders lined up to welcome America’s change. They apparently felt Obama’s election signaled a better world.

Not so today. While the left rejoiced, Kenya celebrated, Oprah cried, and the media patted themselves on the back and made plans for ensuring his success, Obama, months away from taking office, began to show his true colors. Names like Podesta, Daschle, Clinton, and Holder have been penciled in to the key staff positions. We already knew we were in trouble when he picked his vice-president but who could have expected this line-up? Read the rest of this entry »

Rahm Emanuel’s Plan for Obligatory Service

Posted by Lonely Conservative On November - 13 - 2008 7 COMMENTS

Check out this podcast interview of Rahm Emanuel’s plan for mandatory civil service. The idea is to require yound adults between the age of 18 and 23 to complete 3 to 4 months of “universal civil defense training.” He described this obligatory service as “a common experience” that will “give people a sense of what it’s like to be American.” Emanuel scoffed at the interviewer’s concerns about barracks and uniforms. There was no mention of any exceptions for people who have to work for a living.

The “national civilian security force” Obama’s talked about sounds a lot like Emanuel’s plan.

Happy Birthday USMC!

Posted by Lonely Conservative On November - 11 - 2008 1 COMMENT

Today is the 233rd birthday of the United States Marine Corp. Happy Birthday, and thank you, Marines!

If you would like to show your thanks to active duty Marines or other armed service men and women serving overseas, please consider donating to Operation Gratitude. The troops have done so much for all of us, and asked for so little in return.

Operation Gratitude sends care packages to our troops in harms way. Someone came up with the idea to send Beanie Babies. Not only did those Beanie Babies bring some humor to the troops, they also saved lives.

But then, startling revelations began to arrive at the OpGrat headquarters, and the Beanie Baby project took on a whole new meaning. They were actually saving lives and helping to win the war.

Some of our truly exceptional, brilliant soldiers had the idea to trade the Beanie Babies with Iraqi children for information on hidden IED’s. The children, so bereft of toys, gladly showed soldiers where explosives were hidden in exchange for the coveted cuddly critters.

Soldiers saved by a toy, proving once again that God truly works in mysterious ways. Who could have imagined this? Read full story.

Please consider making a tax deductibe donation to Operation Gratitude in honor of the Birthday of the USMC and Veterans Day. What better way to say “Thank You.”

Kennedy, Roosevelt, Lincoln OH MY

Posted by Allen Wilson On November - 10 - 2008 12 COMMENTS

OK folks please. Let’s stop with the “He’s gonna be the best president ever.” talk. He’s never done anything notable except get elected and it is way too soon to start talk like that. Let’s look at some comparisons that make more sense.

Yes, Kennedy was the last senator to get elected, he was young, and he won because he had an impressive political machine behind him. He also came into office and immediately reversed part of a military decision of his predecessor while allowing the rest to proceed. It was a decision that cost many lives and arguably led to a foreign policy relationship in this hemisphere that has yet to be resolved. His legacy in foreign policy was not great, good, or even by many standards positive.

Kennedy was in a position to resolve Viet Nam but was waiting, for political reasons, till after he was re-elected. The end result is all too well known. His successor botched it horribly. Obama has a big chance to fail as a war time president. I’ll be watching to see what he does, but he has done nothing yet to suggest he is the man of destiny in these conflicts.

Roosevelt served the nation well and gave his health and in the end his life for her. Economically he changed our perception of ourselves but little else. America emerged as a world economic power after WW II mainly because it was the only major industrialized nation with an intact infrastructure. It’s easy to become a world leader when you don’t have any competition. But what has Obama done to draw a comparison with Roosevelt? Again, the only similarity is the circumstances of his election. He is coming into office when the nation is in an economic conundrum. There is nothing in Obama’s history that even slightly resembles Roosevelt.

The most far fetched comparison is Lincoln. Certainly you can say they both had ties to Illinois. They are both obscure politicians from an east coast perspective. Their physical build is similar. What Lincoln was able to do in his time in office was remarkable, but we have to see that in Obama and we haven’t seen any signs of it yet. If he is to keep the country together he had better start working on that now. I do see a resemblance of the division in ideology that Lincoln faced when he come into office, but that was not of his doing it was for him to recognize and overcome.

The only thing these three examples have in common was that they did not finish the term they were serving. Let’s hope that is not the similarity to this presidency. It is however strange that with all of the presidential examples these are the three that people latch onto. Perhaps they hope for the greatness others have demonstrated. Perhaps they have convinced themselves that there is more substance than is warranted. Whatever the cause they will in the end find that the one Obama is most likely to replicate is George W. Bush. Like Bush, it is likely that Obama will serve his nation in the way he feels is best, create great controversy, and be judged by history long after all of the voices we hear today are dust in the wind.

What Bush Got Right - Will He Get Credit?

Posted by Lonely Conservative On November - 10 - 2008 6 COMMENTS

President Bush has taken a beating lately. From the press, the Democrats and the Republicans. But many seem to forget that the first priority of our government is our safety.

As individuals we should be free to succeed or fail as our abilities and work ethic allow. But as individuals we cannot, on our own, protect ourselves from foreign attack. That is the job of our government. For many conservatives, that is one of the few roles of the government for which we are happy to pay taxes. Our safety as a nation is the government’s responsibility.

People have been hollering about Bush violating our rights with the Patriot Act. They think he’s an evil war monger for holding enemy combatants (who wear the uniform of no country) in Guantanomo. Yet they fail to give him credit for keeping us safe. The 9/11 attacks were planned under President Clinton, yet I am not blaming President Clinton for those attacks, I blame the attackers.

Since 9/11/01 there has been no terrorist attack on American soil. And President Bush, as he leaves office, despite the trashing he’s taken from his predecessor, will do everything he can to ensure a smooth transition for the next administration. He is putting country before party or politics. That is all he cares about. Yet he will surely receive no recognition from the media or the Democrats. That makes me sad.

I have my disputes with some of President Bush’s policies. But he is a good and decent man who has the best interests of our country at heart. The way he’s been treated is a disgrace.

I noticed Barack Obama’s tone seemed to change a bit at his first press conference as president-elect. Could it be that he after seeing classified intelligence he finally understands what we are up against? I hope and pray that he does.

Like the rest of us, politicians are human. The Republicans lost their way on domestic issues. They promised smaller government and gave us bigger government. We have ourselves a big economic hole to dig out of. But when it comes to our security, the Republicans have not lost their way, even when it makes them unpopular. For that I am grateful.
