Last year when I went to curriculum night the teachers openly complained about Common Core. This year they must have had a good “talkin’ to.” They just looked glum as they handed out New York State Common Core literature. We parents were also told that complaining about Common Core isn’t productive.
Oh, and if you are a white suburban parent, according to President Obama’s education secretary, the only reason you would complain is that your kids are big dummies, and so are their teachers. OK, those weren’t his exact words, but close enough.
U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan told a group of state schools superintendents Friday that he found it “fascinating” that some of the opposition to the Common Core State Standards has come from “white suburban moms who — all of a sudden — their child isn’t as brilliant as they thought they were, and their school isn’t quite as good as they thought they were.”
I think Arne Duncan needs a lesson in grammar after reading that quote. I also think that perhaps I directed this post at the wrong group of people – it sounds like Duncan just threw school principals and teachers under the bus.
