Wonder Why a Congressional District in Florida is a National Race?

Florida Congressional District 20 is stacking up to be a race of National importance. It isn’t so much what is there as who is running and what elevates it to the spotlight is the incumbent Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Wasserman Schultz has taken on a new responsibility since April as the Chair of the Democratic National Committee and as such is the mouthpiece for their platform and strategy. The DNC is exhibiting an almost flagrant disregard for the constituents of this district by appointing their Congresswoman rather than a non-representative. With the appointment they have said, in essence, your Congresswoman can better spend her time representing the president and raising funds for his campaign than working on your behalf in the House of Representatives.

Into this fray steps her opponent from 2010. The then novice campaigner, Karen Harrington, ran a short sharp race after a long and arduous primary and ended up with about 40% of the vote in a deep blue district. This time around Harrington is campaigning from the beginning as Ms. Wasserman Schultz’s opponent. There is no mistaking her resolve and awareness that this is going to be a battle royale against a heavyweight with deep DNC pockets if the going starts to get tough for the Dems.

The real question here is whether the New England born Florida raised business woman can convince the disenfranchised voters of this Florida District that they deserve better than a party spokeswoman for a representative in Washington. At a time when every vote and every idea counts towards solving the problems on main street the DNC might just have made a tactical error in thinking their tough talking chairwoman is ballot proof. Listening to each of these two speak in Central Florida outside of their respective districts recently it’s certain while Harrington understand the mood of the nation, Wasserman Schultz is focused on building support for campaign war chests. Time will tell if the RNC and the people of Florida and the Nation can muster support and money behind Harrington. So far, it appears that this fight will reach well beyond the borders of the Sunshine State. Looks like both sides may be sacrificing a few latte’s in lieu of donations to help out their candidates in this race.

At least having Debbie Wasserman Schultz chairing the DNC the voters will get plenty of opportunities to hear for themselves what a loon she is.
