Obama Vows to Cut the Deficit – Really, He Did

By Lonely Conservative

What a joke. After a year of assualting the national budget and the economy, the president now says he’s going to concentrate on reducing the deficit. That’s like me saying right after I max out my credit cards and take out a $2 million mortgage I’m going to get serious about getting out of debt.  If he’s serious he’ll be the Grinch and veto whatever health care bill lands on his desk. We all know he isn’t about to do that, so why should we believe he’s going to do a darn thing about the deficit?

Politico reported:

President Barack Obama plans to announce in next year’s State of the Union address that he wants to focus extensively on cutting the federal deficit in 2010 – and will downplay other new domestic spending beyond jobs programs, according to top aides involved in the planning.

The president’s plan, which the officials said was under discussion before this month’s Democratic election setbacks, represents both a practical and a political calculation by this White House.

On the practical side, Obama has spent more money on new programs in nine months than Bill Clinton did in eight years, pushing the annual deficit to $1.4 trillion. This leaves little room for big spending initiatives.

On the political side, Obama can help moderate Democrats avoid some tough votes in an election year and, perhaps more importantly, calm the nerves of independent voters who are voicing big concerns with the big spending and deficits. Even if Obama succeeds – and that’s a big if – it will be tough for many Democrats to sell themselves as deeply concerned about spending after voting for the stimulus, the bailouts, the health care legislation and a plan to address global warming, four enormous government programs.

Oh I get it. Stop spending just long enough to get Democrats reelected so they can ramp up spending (and taxes) the following year.

In fairness to him, he did express concern about the cost of the war, and military spending. rj

  3. For the love of god, you’re not listening. If we don’t spend the trillions on bailouts and health care we’ll never be able to cut the federal deficit. It’s simple math spend a trillion save 50 trillion ; ) No doubt they’ll try and talk a good game right before the 2010 elections.

If I may borrow a word from a friend to apply to our president…the word is doucheclot!
