House Republicans: Don’t Count on Blue Dogs for Fiscal Responsibility
ByBlue Dog Democrats aren’t going to do anything to stop the fiscally reckless Obama administration and Congressional Democrats.
That’s the message Reps. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Scott Garrett (R-NJ) and Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) delivered during this afternoon’s blogger conference call. Kevin McCarthy said the Blue Dogs have folded on every major issue, and there are only about two true Blue Dogs left in the House.
Bob Goodlatte said the Democrats’ plans will be devastating for American small businesses:
-Allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire – ie: a big tax increase on small businesses.
-An 8% payroll tax on businesses that cannot provide health insurance for employees.
-An additional increase in taxes on Americans earning more than $250K per year, ie: small business owners.
-An increase in energy costs if the Democrats pass a cap and tax bill.
If small businesses can’t keep more of their earnings they won’t be creating jobs, and more Americans will lose their jobs.
They said Republicans have consistently made suggestions and crafted bills that would actually stimulate the economy, unlike the massive stimulus bill that did nothing to create jobs. In their opinion the Blue Dogs haven’t done anything to stop the massive spending and debt.
Bob Goodlatte told us he spoke to a group of students and asked them to try to envision a trillion dollars. He told the children that a four inch stack of $1000 bills is equal to one million dollars. To get to a trillion dollars that stack of $1000 bills would be sixty three miles high! Now picture the thirteen trillion dollars in debt we’re in. The same group who campaigned against the spending of George W. Bush has incurred more debt since the beginning of this year than every previous administration and congress in the history of this republic combined.
They also pointed out how Washington DC is one of the few places in the nation where the economy is booming. That’s due to the massive expansion of government that’s taking place. Unemployment in DC is down and housing prices are up. But states like Scott Garrett’s New Jersey are suffering with unemployment hovering around 10%. If you need a model for what things are going to look like throughout the states, just look at New Jersey. High taxes and big spending bring about record unemployment and economic misery.
The message of the call was that the spending and debt of the current administration is dangerous and unsustainable. They believe they have offered some sensible solutions and have been shut out by the majority party. McCarthy noted the Chicago style of politics – intimidate, re-frame and re-name unpopular policies, and cut deals. And don’t count on the Blue Dogs to stand on the side of fiscal responsibility or transparency, they’re too busy cutting deals and then running for cover.
