Don’t Worry About Social Security

Posted by lonelyconservative On March - 31 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

To hear some people talk, there is absolutely nothing to worry about when it comes to the fiscal health of Social Security.

This piece in today’s Syracuse Post Standard perfectly sums up that position. It was written by newspaper editors, so it’s got to be reliable, right? These guys take the argument even further by noting that any potential fixes could actually make things worse. (Can’t that be said of anything the government touches?)

For liberals, socialists, progressives and any other cradle-to-grave mentality folks, there really is nothing to worry about. Come on, all they need to do is raise taxes. Voila! Problem solved! Plus, they promise to only raise taxes on victimizers: the rich, investors and corporations who have plenty of money to spare. So what?

You know what, they’re right. If you dream of living in a socialist country, your dream can come true without ever having to leave the good old US of A. Congratulations!

Oh, just forget about it. Who is John Galt?

If you want just one good article to read today, read this (unless you’re a big liberal). Bret Prelutsky makes the case that liberalism is a mental disorder.

If you are a big liberal and you’re looking to move to a totally communist country I highly recommend this article. It offers a glimpse into the utopia known as North Korea. Thanks, but I’ll take capitalism any day.

If you still don’t believe that Obama is a big fat liar, read this. Maybe you’ll change your mind.

Big bad oil company executives are going to take some flack when they testify before Congress on Thursday. Why don’t we make lawmakers testify about high gas taxes and their refusal to let oil companies drill on our own soil? Just think how many jobs they could take from overseas and bring home.

Needless to say, NY lawmakers again have failed to deliver an on-time budget. On the positive side, there is finally some bi-partisan agreement in Albany. They all like the idea of increasing the per-pack cigarette tax to $3.00. Don’t they understand that the more they increase the tax, the more people turn to the internet or Native American stores for their smokes? Duh.

Finally some good news. Charges were dropped against one of the Haditha marines. Click here for more on this story. Is anyone else sick of the left trying to make our soldiers and marines out to be monsters? Let’s hope that all charges are dropped against all of these marines.

Here is a great article about the new deal and those calling for a new new deal. It hits the nail right on the head. Big government doesn’t solve problems and never did.

If Spitzer, AKA Client 9, didn’t resign after being caught up in the prostitution ring, he probably would have faced impeachment for his other dirty tricks. Click here for the full story.

Politicians keep promising more and more so that they can get elected. Before you buy into it read this. We can’t afford the programs we already have. How can they even think about adding more? It is truly mind boggling.

Don’t Get Caught Off Guard

Posted by lonelyconservative On March - 28 - 2008 7 COMMENTS

Most of us conservatives have found ourselves at a party or at work when we’re assailed by an ultra lefty , telling us why the government should take care of us from the cradle to the grave. Or that we’re “addicted to oil” or killing the planet. Sometimes we’re caught off guard and left speechless. Well I’m here to tell you that you don’t need to go into battle unarmed!

Visit the Heritage Foundation and order your free pocket Constitution!

Keep it in your pocket or your purse and when you’re assailed pull it out and ask your assailant where in the Constitution does it say that we’re all entitled to free health insurance. Where does it say that you can’t display the Ten Commandments? Where does it say that it’s the President’s job to “fix” our country? Our country is a republic, not a pure democracy.

It probably won’t help you with the Iraq argument. Just remember, facts are stubborn things. It is a fact that the Clinton Administration’s policy toward Iraq was regime change. It’s a fact that Sadam Hussein used WMD’s to slaughter thousands of Kurds. It’s a fact that Sadam Hussein violated numerous UN resolutions. It’s a fact that the Congress approved the use of force to invade Iraq based on the same intelligence available to the Bush Administration. Regardless of how you feel about why we went into Iraq, it’s a fact that we are there now and so are the terrorists. We have a moral obligation to finish what we started.

Political Roundup

Iraqi spies went on a junket to Iraq with three Democratic congressmen during the run-up to the invasion of Iraq. The trip was paid for with 2 MILLION barrels of oil, taken from the Oil for Food Program. Let’s see, oil was trading at about $50 a barrel at the time. Not bad for a few days’ work. If it had been Republican congressmen all of the major news networks would have interrupted soap operas with the “Breaking News”. We’ll have to see if it gets a mention in any of the MSM newspapers or programs. Click here for more on this story.

Barrack Obama released part of his plan to help the economy today in a speech. He proposed more regulation of business. Well, there’s a surprise! Later he was interviewed on CNBC and said he would raise the capital gains tax, roll back the Bush tax cuts, etc. Not to be outdone, Congress would like to raise our taxes as well, to the tune of about $3000 per family per year. I don’t know about you, but there is a lot I can do with $3000 that doesn’t include increasing the size of the federal government. Maybe I would even spend it, helping out the economy.

Client 9’s legal troubles have only just begun. It looks like he frequented yet another high priced call girl ring. He’s just like the energizer bunny, except Spitzer just keeps Ho’ing and Ho’ing.

Yet another new poll shows John McCain ahead of both Clinton and Obama. If you are a conservative who doesn’t want to vote for McCain I suggest you read this piece by Mark Hillman. John McCain will not be all things to all conservatives, but come on people, consider the alternative!

According to this article Condi Rice is leaving the door open to a McCain/Rice ticket. That’s interesting. But then again…McCain was out campaigning with Mitt Romney. Oh the Suspense!

It looks like they’ve made up.

Who is Better on the Economy?

Posted by lonelyconservative On March - 26 - 2008 1 COMMENT

The male democrat presidential candidate (we all know his name, which I’m sick of) gave a speech today blasting John McCain when it comes to the ecomony.

As president, Obama said he will address the situation by reworking existing subprime loans into affordable long-term fixed loans, creating a foreclosure prevention fund, and cracking down on mortgage fraud and predatory lenders.

“John McCain may call helping struggling homeowners pandering, but I don’t think the families in North Carolina who are losing their homes would see it that way,” Obama said, referring to McCain’s comment yesterday that he “will not play election year politics with the housing crisis.”

Isn’t promising government programs to solve the problems of all people playing election year politics? The male candidate plans on giving a “Major Economic Speech” tomorrow. I wonder what new socialist plans he’s going to unleash this time.

If the male candidate mentions the problems with Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid I’ll be shocked. Unless, that is, he talks about raising taxes on greedy corporations and rich people. That, and declaring defeat in Iraq are his economic solutions for everything. Come to think of it, there really isn’t much difference between the male and the female Democrat candidates, is there?

I’m not a John McCain cheerleader, but at least he is not proposing to bail out delinquent borrowers with taxpayer money. He isn’t out there promising free health care for everybody, knowing we can’t afford the programs that are already in place.

Must Reads of the Day

Couldn’t the candidates do a lot more good for poor people if they were to donate all of that campaign cash to help the needy?

Does anybody really care who the rest of the world wants as the next US president?

Sometimes Congress needs to do nothing. Whenever they try to solve a problem all they do is create ten more problems.

Who can we Trust with the Economy?

Posted by lonelyconservative On March - 25 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

The actions of the Federal Reserve after the collapse of Bear Stearns earned praise from politicians on both sides of the aisle. That makes me suspicious. Unlike Congress the Fed can move swiftly in times of economic crisis in order to avoid further economic adversity. They did their job last week and the markets responded positively.

This article by Rich Lowry at Townhall.com does a pretty good job of summing up the current economic situation. This is one of many articles that I’ve read on the subject and many of them are more alarming than this one.

The only analogy I can draw here is that of putting a bandage on a wound that hasn’t been cleaned. Sure, the bleeding stops but underneath there is an infection festering that could compromise the entire system. Would it be better to endure the temporary pain of cleaning the wound and giving it time to heal?

I certainly don’t trust any of the Democrats when it comes to the economy. But to be quite honest I don’t know if the Republicans are much better. Letting the market correct itself naturally may be slightly painful in the short term but healthy in the long term. I have a feeling that no politician is willing to go out on that limb.

Must Reads of the Day

The Obama’s aren’t as generous as they would lead us to believe. They’re tax returns were released. Read more here.

The economy is the biggest election issue. I’m not the only one who thinks John McCain should choose Mitt Romney as his running mate.

My opinion of John McCain went up when I found out that Hugo Chavez doesn’t like him.

Speaking of Hugo Chavez, let’s not forget what’s happending south of the border.

John McCain picked up a big endorsement from Nancy Reagan today. (But I still want him to choose Romney as his running mate.)

Labels

Posted by lonelyconservative On March - 24 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

I’m sick of Barack Obama and I’m sick of writing about him. But then I come across stories like this one and I just can’t keep myself from commenting. He doesn’t like labels like “liberal”, that’s just so passe. Just because he says he doesn’t want to be called what he is doesn’t mean that he isn’t. Would he prefer Marxist? If we get rid of labels how do we know what we’re buying?

I would label Oprah Winfrey “AWOL” since the story of Barack’s pastor began airing. Why isn’t she out there defending him? Could it be because she left that church years ago?

While we’re on the subject of labels, perhaps “misleader” would be a good one for Hillary Clinton. It seems that she misspoke when she remembered landing under sniper fire in Bosnia. Just remember to suspend misbelief when you hear her speak from now on. Then there won’t be any more misunderstandings.

There are a number of labels we could apply to the Democratic Party these days. Inept, blundering and bungling all come to mind. It’s been delightful to witness.

When it comes to John McCain “shortsighted” may be appropriate. Did he have any idea that McCain-Feingold would bring him this $350 million problem?

Term Limits

Posted by lonelyconservative On March - 23 - 2008 2 COMMENTS

I keep wondering what the founding fathers of our country would think of the massive, disgusting thing that is our federal government. I believe they would be horrified, and if they could have envisioned such a thing that they would have made term limites for Congress a law. Unfortunately, nobody’s perfect.

The gang of theives in the House and Senate today will never pass a term limit law on themselves. They just wouldn’t do it. But what if new candidates running for Congress were to pledge to serve no more than 6 years, if elected? They could tell the people that they aren’t in it for themselves, and then prove it.

It’s just a thought, but wouldn’t it be nice if this caught on?

John Adams

Posted by lonelyconservative On March - 22 - 2008 1 COMMENT

HBO is broadcasting a 7 part miniseries about the life of John Adams. We recorded parts I and II and watched them last night. I’m not usually one to rave about movies, but I have to say this series has been excellent so far.

The series is bringing history to life, and even though we know how things turn out we can’t wait to watch the next episode. I felt like I was getting to know the founders of our country, seeing their struggles that and the difficulties of the times. John Adams was a lawyer who believed in the rule of law. It wasn’t until the Crown’s crushing regulations against Massachussets that he signed on to the cause of fighting for independence. When he did sign on, he did so quite fully.

When he met Benjamin Frankin in Philadelphia, Franklin cautioned him against moving too quickly or insulting his opposition. George Washington spoke of his duty and we see just how enormous was his burden, with a lack of weapons, ammo and tents for his dwindling troops. The quiet Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, carefully choosing each word. Ben Franklin edited the document, replacing “sacred” with “self evident” because it sounded like it was coming from the puplpit. (Not, as some would have us believe, because he didn’t believe in God). Thomas Jefferson abhored slavery which was apparent in the draft of the declaration. Jefferson again edited the wording, noting that the southern colonies would not go along with emancipation. That battle would have to be fought another day.

They even had pansy-liberals back then. Rutledge ended up on the right side saying “We know which way the wind blows.” John Dickenson, a Quaker from Pennsylvania, feared the consequences of a war, but had the grace to be absent during the critical vote to declare independence.

One thing that struck me is just how spoiled we all are today. There was a scene where Abigail Adams and the children were home alone while John Adams was in Philadelphia. There was a small pox outbreak and Abigail had to make a decision to be vaccinated against the disease. She took a chance, knowing that either way she and her children could die. I don’t want to give it away, but I will say that I plan to show my kids that scene so they can see how good they have it.

We also see Abigail’s counsel to her husband, and that the rights of women and slaves were important to people back then. But they could only fight one cause at a time. In order to grant rights to anybody, they first needed to win independence from Britain.

Part III will be aired Sunday night. Ben Franklin and John Adams are off to France on a diplomatic mission, attempting to drum up support for the struggling army. (Much to Abigail’s chagrin.)

This series is a refreshing reminder of what our country is all about, and the extreme sacrificies of so many, made so long ago for the freedoms we hold dear. For those sacrifices we should all be grateful.
